To debate or not to debate? We’ve had a lot of salty opinions about it in DK comments. Personally — I hate to see Trump get airtime in a debate knowing he just brings a domineering Gish Gallop fusillade of lies and toxicity that can’t help but go unchecked by the moderator.
But I’d also hate to see the Biden Campaign allow the Trump campaign to claim that Biden is “chicken”, afraid to debate Trump. So on balance I’m glad to see the bravado here. A sizeable % of voters do pay attention and respond to that kind of stuff — and they are susceptible to a Trump narrative that Biden is less “Alpha” than Trump.
Biden and his camp make an interesting proposal, a departure from the usual Commission on Presidential Debates norms. Biden wants 1 debate in June and 1 debate in September — not a cluster that doesn’t happen until Sept and then there’s three of them and it gets tedious. Good move, I support that.
He also wants news networks to run the debates, rather than the Commission. I’m not sure of the backstory on that, maybe commenters will have more context.
